Gian Lorenzo Bernini
Self-portait as Alexander the Great
Private Collection
The exhibition presents artworks of extraordinary importance, some of them never exhibited before, such as
three paintings by Bernini (such as the Self-portait as Alexander the Great), four paintings by
Baciccio (such as the Pasce Poves Meas recently found and purchased by the Galleria Nazionale di
Cosenza), two artworks by Batoni, two by Mattia Preti, one painting by Luca Giordano, and many other
masterpieces.
For this exhibit, the Roman aristocracy for the first time has shown a strong participation lending important
masterpieces never exposed to the public. The artworks come from the collections of important noble families
of Rome such as the Aldobrandini, the Boncompagni Ludovisi, Sacchetti, Chigi, and the Torlonia. Many artworks
come also from important private collectors such as Luigi Koelliker.
The ancient history of Rome is represented by the presence of important men that have changed the history. The
exhibition highlights the importance of these important men that have represented the history of Rome in
different ways : the Roman Emperors, the Popes, the Princes, the Bourgeoisie, the Cardinals, but also artists
such as Raphael or Bernini.
In the exhibit we can find artworks by artists such as Gianlorenzo Bernini, Scipione Pulzone, Bartolomeo Passerotti,
Domenichino, Alessandro Algardi, Luca Giordano, Mattia Preti, il Borgognone, Baciccio, Ferdinand Voet, Carlo Maratti,
